Love Us Some Tech
I recently had a student ask me about a particular fitness tracker; apparently it was one of the newer products on the market and a bunch of pro athletes are using it. I honestly don’t remember the name of it because it’s insignificant in my mind. The use of smart watches, fitness trackers, heart monitors, and the host of other has gained huge popularity in the past 3-5 years. It’s regularly ranked as one of the top fitness trends. I get it. Tech is cool, sexy and fun.
My problem with fitness tech is that most people who use them aren’t at a level where they can actually take advantage of the information the technology actually provides them. Meaning, most people walking around with their fit-bits and whatnot don’t even have good diets, have poor sleep habits, and aren’t active enough to make any significant healthy change…but they can see their heartrate and know how many steps they took that day! We all too often buy the latest gadget with the hope it will magically bring with it a jolt of discipline and motivation to finally make the necessary lifestyle change to beat obesity, diabetes, heart disease and various other metabolic issues. We know that’s not true.
So, save your money. Instead, surround yourself by people. Find a place with people who motivate, inspire and hold you accountable to your goals. People who will show up like clockwork and call you out when you don’t. Tech is full of fads that come and go. People endure. People push you, tech doesn’t. Plus, the technology is only as good as the work behind it. As the old saying goes Garbage In Equals Garbage Out! Put down the tech and get off your butt, train hard everyday, eat good everyday and results will find you!
